GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Two of the top defensive lineman in the state of Florida have officially signed their National Letters of Intent to play football at the next level. Mykah Newton has committed to the University of Miami and Jarquez Carter is heading to Ohio State. Both have very impressive resumes that have helped them earn spots on DI football programs.
Mykah Newton - University of Miami
Mykah Newton’s journey from Newberry, Florida to the University of Miami is a testament to resilience, faith, and the support of his family and community. As he prepares to take his talents to the next level, Newton reflects on the experiences, lessons, and motivations that have shaped his path—and what he hopes to accomplish at Miami and beyond.
For Newton, the emotions surrounding his recruitment and decision to sign with Miami were overwhelming in the best way.” It was just a breath of fresh air. It really just showed how hard I’ve been working,” he shared. The process wasn’t without its challenges, but the moment he realized that his dreams were coming true felt like a blessing.” I’m blessed to be in this position, “Newton emphasized.
Reflecting on his football journey, Newton admitted it wasn’t always easy. ” My maturity level took some time to develop,” he said. But once he knew what he wanted, he pursued it relentlessly. With guidance from coaches and mentors, Newton grew both as a player and a young man. ” They helped me grow into the person I am today. I learned to fight through every negative thing and trust the process,” he explained.
When asked what made Miami stand out to him, Newton’s answer was clear. It wasn’t just the football program—it was the entire experience. ” Everything about it stood out. Coach Cristobal is doing an amazing job. He’s a cool guy who you can talk to about more than just football,” Newton shared.
In addition to football, Newton is pursuing a degree in kinesiology, driven by a deep desire to help others. ” I love helping people. After dealing with some injuries myself and seeing my grandma go through issues with her hip, I realized how much I loved physical therapy and wanted to pursue a career in that field,” he explained.
For Newton, his family—especially his mother and grandmother—has been a major source of support throughout his life.” My mom means everything to me. We grew up together, and she taught me so much about life. She’s always been there for me, and I’m grateful for everything she’s done,” he said with deep appreciation.
Newton also shared the impact his late grandmother, had on his life.” She was like my second mom. She helped me calm down when I was younger and taught me how to control myself. She was always there for me, and I miss her a lot,” Newton said.
Even though she passed away in 2020, his grandmother’s memory continues to drive him. ” I play for my grandma. She’s always with me, and I carry her in my heart,” he said.
As Newton continues his football journey at Miami, he’s determined to leave a legacy that goes beyond the field. ” I’m doing this for my family, for the community, and for everyone who’s supported me. I’m going to work hard and do whatever it takes to make it,” he said with conviction.
Jarquez Carter - Ohio State University
Jarquez Carter’s journey from Newberry, Florida to Ohio State is more than just a recruitment story—it’s about commitment, community, and big dreams for the future.
For Carter, the decision to commit to Ohio State was simple and sure from the start.” It felt good. Right when I committed, you should’ve known that’s why I was going to sign. I never questioned the school. It always been Ohio State.”
Carter didn’t just commit to Ohio State; he committed to helping build a championship-caliber team.” I really did this for the media. I officially signed the papers yesterday. We built the best class in the country. I feel like we have a high ceiling this year. We’re going for that championship.” His confidence in his new team is clear. Carter sees this year’s recruiting class as a foundation for future greatness, believing that with the talent they’ve assembled, a national championship is within reach.
For Carter, family—especially his mother—has been a constant source of strength.” My mom means everything to me. She taught me so much, especially how to become a man. She was always there to give advice and comfort. I wouldn’t be here without her—she pushed us every night to be our best.”
Carter’s decision to enroll early at Ohio State is a strategic one, allowing him to get a jumpstart on his college career.” Enrolling early gives me a huge advantage. I can practice during the bowl game and spring camp, putting me ahead of those who come in June. This helps me get evaluated earlier and ready for the next step.” By joining the team early, Carter is positioning himself to make an immediate impact and prove his value to the coaching staff.
As Carter prepares for life in the Big Ten, he’s fully aware of the challenges that lie ahead.” I’m ready for the challenge of the Big Ten. People have underestimated it because of the SEC, but we’re here to prove the Big Ten is the best conference in college football. We’re coming for everyone.”
Perhaps no rivalry in college football is as intense as Ohio State’s clash with Michigan, and Carter has no plans to let the Buckeyes lose to their rivals. " I promise, we ain’t losing to Michigan when I get to Ohio State. Seeing them put the flag on our field made me want to get out there and do something about it. That game means everything, and we’re going to make sure we win it every year.”
Looking ahead to the future, Carter has big dreams, both on and off the field.” In 10 years, I see myself in the NFL—not just making money but being a role model for kids. I want them to look up to me, say ‘That’s my favorite player,’ and know that I’m making a difference in their lives.” His goal isn’t just to make it to the NFL, but to inspire the next generation of athletes and be a positive role model.
